Does Seaweed Really Have Anti Aging Properties?

Recently in the news we heard about the demand for seaweed because of its anti aging properties. Now the question becomes is it really all the news is making it out to be.

It seems a Thierry Chopin, a biologist from Saint John is trying to get a junk of the multi-billion dollar beauty industry with seaweed, which he is currently growing at a lab in Monaco. Chopin  works at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John, and right now is growing kelp near Cooke Aquaculture fish farms in Charlotte County for Exsymol SAM, which is a Monaco-based pharmaceutical company.

SeaweedWhy the excitement? Well it seems that research has shown that there are bioactive compounds in seaweed cells that contain anti aging ingredients that will reverse the signs of aging and soften the skin. It seems the seaweed that is produced in the waters off New Brunswick are getting special attention because they have the highest concentrations of theses compounds.

The seaweed grows the most during the winter and spring. Once it is harvested Chopin will sell the seaweed to L’Oreal or Estee Lauder. Seaweed is not just used in skin care products it is also taken as a supplement and provides the following benefits.

The body can easily break down seaweed releasing the healthful substances inside, that is packed with vitamins and minerals. Because it grows in sea water, it contains nutrients that are not found in land vegetables.

Spas are known for the seaweed wraps they provide that help with cellulite, detoxify, and leave the skin looking soft, supple and years younger. It seems seaweed is becoming extremely popular in skin care products and is very quickly becoming mainstream.

  1. I will be eating more seaweed salads form here on out. I don’t mind the taste of it and if it can help me this much, it’s worth it! 🙂

    • What’s a seaweed salad? It sounds interesting, but the only time I had seaweed, it tasted very strong and the texture was almost slimy. Don’t tell me I ate bad seaweed?

  2. It makes sense that seaweed has anti aging properties, it is nutrient dense and has more vitamins than any other vegetable.

  3. I get a decent amount of seaweed in my diet because my favourite sushi and sushi-mi dishes have seaweed in them. If it helps me fight aging, all the better.
