Why Anti Aging is believed to be unethical?
The Chairman of the United States of America's President's Council of
Bioethics is Leon Kass, from years 2001 up to 2005. The question that bugs Leon
Kass is whether or not the possibility of an exacerbation to today’s
overpopulation makes the entire concept of life extension unethical.
He strongly believes that life extension through anti-aging products and
treatment methods are simply done to covet a prolonged lifespan. He says that
such case is merely indicative of the people’s failure to open themselves to
procreation and to a higher purpose. In fact, he even states that life extension
is merely a childish desire that is predominantly narcissistic that is highly
incompatible with the natural process of posterity.
The Aging process
The aging process starts as soon as human beings are released from their
mother’s womb. Naturally, the body sloughs off every passing day, but
regenerates new cells as well. This is the natural wear and tear pattern of
life. As children, the speed of the aging process is very different as compared
to when they grow older.
The search For The Fountain Of Youth
Since then, people have always searched for the fountain of youth.
Unfortunately, however, such fountain does not exist in real life. It is a good
thing that there are many treatment methods today that somehow battle the aging
process. Moreover, it is an advantage that there are many methods today that can
be availed for such low costs. The main goal of anti-aging products is to extend
the lifespan of human beings, preferable beyond the current maximum.
The Hayflick limit
Doctor Leonard Hayflick is the man who discovered the scientific finding that
mammalian cells divide only a certain number of times. This was also proven as a
result of when the telomeres that are found on the ends of chromosomes shorten
when each of the cells divide. Once these telomeres are all gone, the DNA cannot
be copied anymore and the entire process of cell division ceases.
The telomeres and telomerase
It was in 2001 when some experimenters from the Geron Corporation were able
to figure out how to lengthen the telomeres that can be found in senescent
mammalian cells. They were able to do so by introducing the telomerase to the
test mammals. After the two different substances were combined, they immediately
became younger cells.
Such scientific findings were also backed up by Aubrey de Grey’s “engineered
negligible senescence”. It was through this material that it was proposed that
the human lifespan can be extended with the use of short series of certain
cellular therapies.
Hormone therapies
Experimenters were able to figure out the relation of hormones to the life
extension because they were able to determine how the removal of the pituitary
gland in mice somehow shortened the lifespan of the test mice. With such
scientific findings, they were able to finalize that mammals have a hormonal
system that somehow triggers different kinds of age-related diseases.
