The Rise Of Anti-aging Clinics In Today's Culture!

Aging has been a predominant issue for a variety of cultures across the world, and each one has found their own way of dealing with the topic. Centuries ago, Christians found a certain virtue and revered wisdom in those who had grown old; they came to note a state of spiritual enlightenment in their elders as their bodies lost their vibrancy. On the other hand, the ancient Roman culture saw an average life expectancy of 46 in men, who simply worked until the day they died. In today's American culture, we see things differently. We look to technology to feed our optimism and our inability to accept our shortcomings. We look at the aging process as a problem and a puzzle that must be solved. In 2008, anchorwoman, Barbara Walters put forth the challenge: “Live to 150. Can you do it?” Skinny Woman

Of course, the idea of fighting the aging process is not new in America. Our country's history is riddled with traveling mountebanks selling tonics, medicine and vitamin showmen, groundbreakers and innovators in the field of cryonics, and salespeople specializing in the field of anti-aging. Today, we continue our search for the best ways to fight aging, but with technology and an exponentially greater budget than ever before. In the United States, services and products for anti-aging are constantly growing; the industry has hit about $80 billion, and is projected to reach over $115 billion in 2015, according to the research firm of Global Industry Analysts. The baby boomers' generation is more adamant than ever in their quest to reach immortality.

Today's headlines frequently announce the advances in science toward the slowing and even the reversal of aging. Scientists have unearthed a wide range of helpful pieces of information; for example, there are proteins known as sirtuins that help to control illnesses associated with aging, in particular a specific protein known as SIRT1. Another substance, Resveratrol, found in red wine and the skins of red grapes, is thought to enhance the production of these proteins. In addition, scientists who specialize in the field of anti-aging, known as bilgerentologists, are learning more and more about those factors that cause cells to age. One hormone, for instance, called 1GF-1, works like insulin to instruct cells to grow. A protein known as mTOR has been identified as that which dictates how a cell responds to chemical stimuli. Scientists have learned that they can interrupt or change the ways these substances work and affect the way in which the body ages as a result. Still other scientists are working with an enzyme known as telomerase. This enzyme can negatively affect the way that chromosomes combust with the aging of a cell. Stem cell research continues as well in hopes of finding methods for growing organs for replacement and the regeneration of human body tissues.

All of these research paths are very exciting. However, it is very important to note that there are no supplements, miracle drugs, or medical answers that have are proven to make us live longer. There is a wide variety of research dealing with the many treatment options for those who are ill. The internet will lead you to believe that these conclusions can be applied to the progress toward anti-aging, but this is not necessarily the case. While Vitamin B-12 shots are effective in helping those with a deficiency, there is no evidence that these shots will offer energizing benefits for those who have no deficiency. Another trend that has been very popular is Chelation therapy; this is the process by which heavy metals are separated from the tissues in the body. It is extremely effective for those who have lead poisoning, but the therapy is not effective for those who have no such malady. Sadly, as consumers fight for anti-aging answers, they are shelling out money for these custom treatments that have no real effects.

Once upon a time, only big name professional athletes or Olympic stars had access to their own professional chemical experts. Today, stars in Hollywood and the music industry have their own gurus and personal regimens of steroids and supplements. In fact, reports have been made that Timbaland, Mary J. Blige, and rap artist 50 Cent have all had human growth hormones shipped directly to them. Clinics specializing in anti-aging are popping up across the country, making their services available to anyone who can afford them.

While the number of consumers seeking anti-aging treatments has reached the millions, there is no way to know exactly how many people are seen by these clinics each year. These clinics all have a similar modus operandi. The treating doctor will offer advice for nutrition, and then recommend a regimen of prescriptions and supplements. These will sometimes include HGH, or human growth hormone, or perhaps testosterone or some other steroid. There will generally be a pharmacy on the premises that will mix the supplements and medications to create your personal treatment. The cost of anabolic treatment is very high, but it is safer than buying HGH from a gym and injecting yourself with an estimated dosage. Prices vary from one clinic to the next, but you can expect a cost of $2,000 or more for the initial visit alone. Each subsequent monthly visit will cost $200 or $300.

According to the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, or DSHEA, of 1994, makers of dietary supplements are not legally obligated to make any guarantees for their products' safety or effectiveness. Therefore, anti-aging clinics are largely unregulated. Processes for manufacturing and labeling are also unregulated, and therefore, a supplement like ginseng can be touted as a promised extender of life, and there is no government control.

The Food and Drug Association controls anabolic steroids, but according to Shaun Assael's “Steroid Nation,” the FDA is not at all adamant about enforcing the rules regarding their use. According to Assael, the FDA opened 55 separate criminal cases in regards to steroid infractions in 2005; Assael reports that the worst punishment given was a letter of warning. If a doctor is willing to certify that there is a medical indication, like a deficiency or other vague diagnosis, you can easily purchase steroids or HGH with no fear of repercussion.

Another trend in the general movement toward anti-aging is the practice of family physicians all over the United States treating their patients with anti-aging regimens. While aging is not a recognized disease or diagnosis in the medical profession, and while anti-aging is not an established medical specialty, doctors are seeing the rise in anti-aging concerns and answering them. These doctors are joining professional organizations like the Age Management Medicine Group and learning the most up to date techniques for anti-aging. They are bringing these techniques into their offices and adding the necessary equipment to provide these treatments to their patients. From 1997 through 2004, the sales and recommendations of anti-aging supplements by medical professionals grew by over 874 percent, and the numbers continue to grow. These numbers come from a trade publication, known as “Natural Products Insider.” It is estimated that for every patient who pursues anti-aging treatment, doctors bring in between $4,000 and $20,000 in additional yearly revenue. This now accounts for over 17,000 physicians.

Perhaps physicians' time is not well spent in administering therapies for cosmetic purposes with no essential value, medically speaking, but today's economy has hit the health care industry hard; because most insurance carriers will not cover treatments for anti-aging, these patients generally pay for their treatments in cash. However, you must consider this: while these treatments may make you feel more vibrant and may make you look younger, they are costly, and there are few studies regarding their long term effects. Also, there is no scientific evidence that anti-aging treatments have any positive effect on longevity.
