Can HGH Change an Athlete's Performance?

A study conducted by Dr. Ken Ho and his team may change the current perspective towards HGH or the human growth hormone. There have been a lot of questions, previously, regarding the effectiveness of HGH in an athlete's performance as its use in sports is fast becoming in demand. Those questions were addressed in full along with the doubts critics have towards the substance by a conclusion that HGH does help improve an athlete's performance. sprinting

The Experimental Findings

In the study conducted on an eight-week period involving 96 amateur athletes, results showed that HGH can actually improve a 100-meter sprinter's capacity by 0.4 second over ten seconds. This is overwhelming because that much of an improvement could turn the worst athlete in competition to be the gold medal finisher.

Aside from HGH injections, some of the male athletes were also given an inactive placebo or testosterone. Those who were given such a dose showed an even better sprint performance. Their sprint capacity merely doubled with a steady supply of both HGH and testosterone.

But if HGH can greatly improve the athletes' sprint capacity, it did not show any effect on their ability to jump or lift weights. It also did not show substantial advantage on muscle mass. Yes, it did help reduce fat mass but it did not provide strong evidence that one can enjoy better muscle quality with regular HGH injections. Also, the study found that athlete's sprint capacity returned to normal barely six weeks after they stopped receiving HGH supplements.

How the Study is Important

There has been too much of a fuss regarding the use of HGH among sportsmen. Critics are greatly concerned that abuse of the substance is becoming common, especially among high-profile athletes. Not too long ago, in November of 2009, Terry Newton became the first athlete who received a two-year ban penalty for testing positive for HGH. That only goes to show how the sports industry is firm on its stand against substance abuse.

Dr. Ho, however, reiterates that the doses they used on the participants are "on the low end of what is believed abuse in sports". This means, clearly, that even while they are vouching for the effectiveness of HGH on enhancing an athlete's performance, they also do not encourage abuse of it.

Yes, HGH can provide lots of amazing advantages but use of it can also come with very serious side effects. As much as HGH can help in letting people enjoy the vitality of youth, it also presents certain dangers that you must be very wary about.

In the end, we must all learn to read through what lies beneath the labels of HGH supplements. Do not just believe what the product manufacturers are telling you but more so, what they refuse to tell. HGH can be a good source of numerous benefits that will help you enjoy life better. But it can also give you a couple of health risks along the way so must always keep your guards up.
