HGH: What Is It All About?
Human growth hormone (HGH) has been the talk of the medical industry for
quite some time now with its perceived health benefits. HGH is said to delay
aging and its related effects such as less dynamic immune system and decreased
physical and mental performance. It is also said to help in cutting down
unwanted pounds. While there have also been talks about the side effects of HGH
particularly in causing diabetes, cancer and high blood pressure, the fuss is a
lot more pronounced on the benefits of this substance.
An article written by Gretchen Reynolds and which appeared on the August 20,
2008 issue of the New York Times gave substantial testimonies on the many
benefits of HGH on the body. The said article notes that growth hormone is
abundant among young people. This helps them in coping with various diseases and
injuries. For instance a 20 year old will have an easier time healing from a
strained muscle compared to a 35 year old. With the administration of HGH, older
individuals can improve their overall health while making their defense system
more capable of dealing with all sorts of illnesses.
The article also cited the case of Dr. Paul Savage of Waukegan, Illinois who
once weighed 267 pounds and had high blood pressure and difficulty in breathing.
He was 38 years old then, and the NY Times described him as a ‘pudgy mess.” Six
years later, he is 100 pounds lighter, with 12 percent body fat and an almost
incandescent skin tone. He said his use of HGH was the main reason why he now
looks a lot younger than his actual age of 44 years old.
Today, Savage runs a hormone therapy clinic which specializes in the
administration of HGH. The NY Times says his franchise now helps around 1,500
people in the United States, most of whom pay up to $15,000 for a yearly
administration of HGH. According to Savage, his patients rise by 100 a month.
The NY Times also cited the case of Dr. Darren Clair who founded the Vibrance
Health Services clinic in Beverly Hills, California. The said age management
clinic is among the many clinics around the country that is administering HGH
with its growing reputation as a treatment for sagging physiques, dwindling
endurance and libido.
The talk of HGH being an excellent anti-aging substance dates back to 1990 when
the New England Journal of Medicine published a study wherein men aged 60 years
and older were given HGH for half a year. According to the NY Times, that said
study revealed that the men showed a lot of improvements in their health
particularly in lean body mass, bone density, and decrease in body fat.
However the NY Times article also raises the issue of whether aging is a disease
that can be dealt with dosing of hormones. The article cites the opinion of Dr.
Susan Nayfield of the National Institute on Aging who said the use of HGH may
have a similar fate as that of hormone replacement for menopausal women. It can
be recounted that hormone replacement for menopausal women was found to cause
increased risks of certain diseases like breast cancer and mental impairment
among women.
It may just be a matter of time until the issue of whether HGH injections are a
safe and effective medication for aging and sickly individuals gets resolved.
For the meantime, however, it seems that the use of HGH will continue to grow in
the years to come.
