Causes for Concern Pertaining to Glutamine

Glutamine is a Non-Essential Amino Acid  

Glutamine is one of the 20 amino acids that were recognized in the standard genetic code. It is one of the amino acids that the body has the most abundant supply of. It is considered a non-essential amino acid. It must be clear, though, that “non-essential” only means it is a naturally occurring substance in the body and not that Glutamine is unnecessary for bodily functions. In fact, it is necessary for several functions including those that involve the immune system and the digestive system.

Glutamine is a Naturally Occurring Substance  

Naturally, the body produces just enough amounts of Glutamine. Under normal circumstances, there should be no need for Glutamine because it is a naturally occurring substance in the body. That, of course, has a few exceptions.   When the body is producing not enough of Glutamine, in the case of people who are into intense physical activities or those who have certain conditions that deplete the amount of this amino acid stored in the body, supplemental stock may be needed. 

Glutamine can be obtained from a Variety of Food Sources

Like any other amino acid, Glutamine is readily available from several dietary sources. As a building block of protein, Glutamine can be obtained from a variety of foods from meat to poultry to fish to beans to vegetables to dairy products. Beef, chicken, fish, cabbage, beets, beans, milk, eggs, and parsley are just some of protein-rich foods that are also good sources of Glutamine. Based on studies, a typical diet allows for about 5 milligrams of Glutamine. That is certainly not enough to complement the body’s needs for it. But since thee body naturally produces sufficient supply of Glutamine, some critics insist there is no need for a supplemental intake.

Glutamine is especially associated with athletes and other individuals who undergo intense physical training. The reason for athletes usually requiring an extra supply of Glutamine is basically sourced from the behavior of this amino acid. More than sixty percent of Glutamine can be found on the skeletal muscles. Those muscles are the ones strained during intense workouts. During a stressful physical activity, high levels of Glutamine are released onto the bloodstream causing depletion on the body’s supply. If the diminishing level of Glutamine is not resolved, the body will have less energy to perform more exercises. It will also have less protection against infections. It will also make the healing process longer since Glutamine is a known player that aids in wound healing.  Glutamine is commonly used by athletes due to its known benefits in muscle mass and strength, the body’s wound healing ability, and efficient immune function. Glutamine is also found useful in human growth hormone production, making it a powerful element to begin with.
